How the pieces move

  • KingOne step any way. Protect it: if it can’t escape check, that’s checkmate.

  • QueenAny distance, straight or diagonal.

  • RookAny distance, straight lines.

  • BishopAny distance, diagonals only.

  • KnightJumps in an L: two, then one to the side.

  • PawnForward one (two on its first move). Captures diagonally.

Castling
The king moves two squares toward a rook, and the rook hops over it. Only if neither has moved and the king isn’t in check.
Promotion
A pawn that reaches the far side becomes a queen, rook, bishop or knight.
En passant
A pawn that rushes two squares past an enemy pawn can be captured as if it had moved one.

How big
Around 3 meters (10 feet) long — about the length of a small car.

Facts

  • Deinonychus means 'terrible claw' — it carried a large, curved claw on the second toe of each foot, held off the ground as it walked.
  • Paleontologist John Ostrom's 1969 study of Deinonychus helped launch the 'dinosaur renaissance,' reframing dinosaurs as active, agile animals instead of slow, lumbering ones.
  • Ostrom's work on Deinonychus also revived the idea that birds descended from small theropod dinosaurs — now the mainstream scientific view.
  • Deinonychus fossils have been found in western North America, including Montana, Wyoming, and Oklahoma.
  • Its long tail was stiffened by bony rods, which likely helped it balance while running and turning.
  • Deinonychus was a dromaeosaurid — the same family as Velociraptor — but much larger, at roughly twice the length.
